Changing Colors on the Wrong Side for Amigurumi

Color work seems daunting, especially when you add in the task of changing colors on the wrong side for amigurumi. However, this task isn’t as bad as it seems. In this article I’ll show you how to change colors with confidence no matter what side of the work you’re working on. So let’s dive right in!

Right Side vs Wrong Side

Before we jump into changing colors, first let’s clarify what ‘right side’ and ‘wrong side’ even mean. For some projects, the sides don’t really matter but when it comes to amigurumi it can make a huge difference.

The ‘right side’ is the outside of your work while the ‘wrong side’ is the inside (where the stuffing goes). One of the easiest ways to tell which side is which is to look at your stitches.

Depending on whether you use yarn over or yarn under single crochet, the stitches on the outside of your work will look like X’s or V’s. On the inside of the work, the stitches will have a horizontal bar. If you’re still having a little trouble telling the difference, check out this quick video.

Typically when you’re making amigurumi, you’ll only be working with the ‘right side’ facing you. However, you might come across some patterns where you need to make short rows or otherwise turn your work. When you’re working with a solid color, this is fairly easy, but when you add in color changes, things get a little more tricky.

Changing Colors on the Wrong Side

If you’re unfamiliar with changing colors, I highly recommend checking out this article first and then coming back here.

For this example, let’s say you need to turn your work and then change colors a few times. In the image below, I’ve already changed from blue to green, then chained 1 and turned. After working a few stitches in green, I’m now ready to change colors.

  1. Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop.
  2. Fold Color B (green) toward you and hold it in place with your thumb.
  3. Bring Color A (blue) out in front of the stitch.
  4. Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook.
  5. Repeat steps 1-4 as many times as you need to change colors.

The process of folding the old color toward you and then bringing the new color forward will help keep all of the floats on the inside of the work. Keeping your tension even and consistent may take a bit of practice, but after a few color changes it should get easier.
